With September zipping into the final third of the month-and “summer” officially ending in a couple of days, a young man’s fancy turns to thoughts of…HEAT!
The icy winds, snow and sleet are soon to arrive-and planning on keeping the family warm this winter has taken on the importance of an international summit meeting.
Unlike past years, nothing can escape the horizon when focusing on keeping warm. Used to be just the “primary” method of heat was on the table. Will it be oil-or wood? Sometimes even electric heat can make sense.
Beyond that, spending money on efficiency has never been more important. Every dollar spent on insulation, energy window replacement, sealing doors and the like will pay dividends in energy efficiency that are a multiple of the original outlay.
Probably this weekend, we’ll do a run-through of our house, making note of everywhere that improvements can be made. Balancing the expected extra cost of heating oil against the dollars we should be spending to make the oil go farther will be tougher this year.
It might be cheaper to shut the house down and rent a shanty in Florida…hmmmm…oh yeah, there’s that little thing called a JOB….
