Goodness knows I have an opinion on just about EVERYTHING….this time, I’ll pose the question to you:
Can you make your living on e-Bay?
94.9 WHOM’s Morning Host GV Rapp casually mentioned to me that one of his regular poker buddies actually quit his full-time job—and is now fully self-employed, making his LIVING on eBay!
I was astounded…..not because I haven’t heard of that kind of thing…it’s just that it usually comes from a late-night TV infomercial. Hey, the “Video Professor” says I can do it, but he wants $80 of my money to tell me how (guess how he’s making HIS living?) When I heard about an ACTUAL person working fulltime to create a living wage on eBay, it definitely got my attention.
This person apparently combs yard sales and flea markets to find items that he thinks can fetch more in cyberspace. That “Petticoat Junction” set of salt and pepper shakers has someone out there searching for them. If you can fill that need (at a tidy profit), why not?
With so many people out of work, there may be real potential for at least keeping body & soul together via the web and becoming an eBay Home Business. Heck, I have enough crap in my house to feed my family for years.
Thought you might enjoy the eBay spoof from none other than Weird Al Yankovic-just click on arrow below:

Valentine's Gift Decoder
Well, Valentine’s Day is this Saturday-and guys, if you haven’t made the trip to the Mall yet to select that SPECIAL gift (deluxe egg timer) for that SPECIAL someone yet, I’d say it’s about time to go.
Ladies, this is for you.
Guys generally think in terms of three-no, make that FOUR gift ideas-that work out into SIX combinations, not necessarily in this order:
1) a card
2) a heart-shaped box of candy
3) flowers
4) jewelry
5) pick two of the above
6) ALL of the above
What you get will be a function of how well the relationship is going. Here’s a quick translation:
#1 ONLY---either you two are SO tight—or so, how shall I say this-ON THE ROCKS-that this option will either delight or disgust you
#2 ONLY---your significant other has zero imagination, but lives close to a Rite Aid
#3 ONLY---your significant other LOVES you-and feels guilty about something
#4 ONLY---your significant other LOVES you more than #3 above-and probably wants
something in return (no comment)
#5 –This will almost always be #1 (card) and then the candy, flowers or jewelry-this
loverboy translates into the same category as the single number above, but needs
the card to say “I Love You” because he cannot
#6—This significant other LOVES YOU, FEELS GUILTY ABOUT SOMETHING,
WANTS SOMETHING in return-----and lives close to a Rite Aid.
For further decoding, click the link below:

The Beatles Arrive Via Ed Sullivan
This past Monday marked the 45th Anniversary of the appearance of the Beatles on the Ed Sullivan show. February 9th, 1964 was a day that everyone ALIVE at the time will always remember. The broadcast broke all TV viewing/audience records, with over 73 million people watching! That meant over 40% of the U.S. population was tuned in-a record that wouldn’t be broken until the final episode of M*A*S*H in 1983.
It remains the #2 watched TV show of all time-the Beatles second appearance is still #3 all-time.
If you’d like to relive that magic moment, click on the link below to see again the Ed Sullivan performance, complete with screaming teenage girls!

Facebook....OK, I Did It
The last 24 hours have been interesting, to say the least. After reporting on this blog a few posts ago that I was contemplating creating a Facebook page, I finally did it yesterday. Groping my way through the set-up (which was easy, actually), I am now learning the power of this tool. I have already received a bunch of e-mails from people whom I haven’t heard from in years! I am just starting to uncover all of the features of Facebook…if you have posted for me (or whatever the heck you call it)-please be patient with me…I’ll get to you eventually…I even “IGNORED” a Friend request by mistake(sorry!). I just don’t want this whole process to be too time consuming. I do have ANOTHER job that's pretty full-time!
If you are looking into creating your own page, watch the “60 Minutes” segment on Facebook—there are two parts:
Part One

Part Two

Will you be my friend?

Anniversary of WHOM/Mt. Washington Fire
It’s hard to believe that a half dozen years have passed since the Great Blaze of 2003 that consumed the entire broadcast facility and power generation plant on the top of Mt. Washington. It all occurred on this day in 2003.
I remember being at home in Portland, listening to 94.9 WHOM at shortly past 3 in the afternoon when the station went off the air. Now, this is unfortunately an all-too-common experience when your transmitter is located at a site known as the “home of the world’s worst weather”. This time, however, it simply SOUNDED DIFFERENT. Instead of an abrupt drop of audio and static, the station simply FADED AWAY to static.
After a frantic call to our Chief Engineer, it soon became apparent that something very unusual was happening. A few calls later, the news was startling-the summit was on fire, everything was lost and people were being evacuated.
The next few hours are simply a blur…and the next few months, we switched locations, antennas and modes of broadcasting to stay on the air. Although WHOM’s transmitter building (which housed the generators and used to contain WMTW-TV’s transmitters for years) was a complete loss, but luckily, the WHOM main tower and antenna were spared. While the transmission line literally melted, the tower escaped damage-due solely to the direction of the wind. Had it come from the other direction, there is no doubt the tower would also have been consumed. I will never forget the unbelievable efforts of all the people who worked in simply brutal conditions to bring temporary power generation to the summit, literally running lines across the frozen ground. Our coverage was greatly diminished at times over the following weeks, but it was gratifying to know that WHOM listeners stuck with us! We were not streaming the station over the web at that time, so many fans simply did without—until we were able to rebuild. We will be forever grateful for their loyalty and support! Our advertisers were likewise extremely understanding and supportive of our efforts to get back to 100%.
After all these years, WHOM’s audience is larger than ever-and with the new transmitters, many feel our sound and coverage is better than before. Below is a short video from the summit:

World's Smallest Car
In this age of frugality, coupled with an increasing awareness of the depletion of our natural resources, it’s not surprising that more emphasis is being given to EFFICIENCY.
The cost of gas-having spiked about $4/gallon-then dropped to under $2—is now is on the rise again. Fuel efficiency is a concern-and SMALLER cars will dominate showrooms for the foreseeable future. Who among us doesn’t almost look with DISDAIN at the owners of Hummers as they chug past? It’s no longer a matter of the price of gas or if you can afford it, but rather---SHOULD you drive a big gas hog just because you CAN?
Of course, you can take things a bit too far…click on the link below to see what I mean:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dJfSS0ZXYdo
I think I’ll stop short of carrying my car into the office, thank you. And God help me if I would ever get into a crash in one of those, with, say…a HUMMER? Hope that every purchase comes with a free can opener—to extract what's left of you when the paramedics arrive!

Google Maps Are Amazing!
It’s a often-told joke that Google will someday “take over the world”. Well, in a way--they already have. Aside from their complete dominance in the arena of “search”, they are expanding into so many areas, from the free blogging platform I use (Blogspot) to E-mail (Gmail) to what I think is the most amazing application so far—Google Maps!
Integrating conventional maps with satellite photos purchased from the government and even combining with terrain maps, you now literally have the WORLD on your computer. If you haven’t zoomed in on a satellite photo of your house from outer space yet, you should….it is incredible! You can also see “street level views”—which is nothing short of astounding.
Add to this the fact that it is FREE—and now available in a mobile version for your cell phone—and you can direct yourself literally anywhere. I don’t own a GPS device, but I have used Google maps, first on my Palm Treo and now Blackberry—to find my way in strange cities to destinations without fail. It even has a locater function for your cell! Using triangulation of the cell signals, a single key press can deliver YOUR location to a pinpoint on a Google map on your handheld!
If you are unfamiliar with Google Maps, click on the link below for a short tutorial:

The Facebook Decision
As a 50 year old male, I have (thus far) resisted the urge to create a page/account/whatevertheheckyoucallit on either MySpace or Facebook.
It seems kinda creepy. I mean, those “social networking” sites are for my teenagers, no?
I’m not out to “hook up” with anyone, don’t really care to share my personal life online (other than this blog I suppose) and I don’t have an overwhelming desire to check into my page multiple times a day or week to manage my “friends”. Of course, my kids tell me that blogging is “so 2006” Well, EXCUUUUUUUSE ME!
There is such a “To Catch A Predator” feel to a guy my age posting this kind of thing.
OK. That said, more and more people (and some of them MY AGE and OLDER, if you can believe that) are espousing the virtues of social networking sites, Facebook in particular. The prevalent reason is that it is apparently a great way to re-connect with friends from high school, college, past jobs, lives—that you haven’t spoken to in years.
I’m also being invited to join LinkedIn, which I guess is similar, but more of a professional networking tool. Maybe it’s ME that’s the tool, but all this talk has me considering the notion of doing it all. Your input is welcome-either in the comments section below or right to my e-mail, which I’ll post below with the daily invitation to have this blog arrive in your e-mail box every day-free!
In the meantime, enjoy “The Facebook Song” by clicking the link below:

Real Men Don't Dance....Or DO They?
Women the world over constantly complain that their husbands never ask them to dance whenever the occasion presents itself.
Luckily for us men, these occasions are few and far between. Weddings are the biggest culprit, where failure to dance may be seen as an insult to the happy couple, although it’s a good bet the GROOM has no desire to dance either. Especially that FIRST dance, where everyone is looking.
And that, basically, is the problem. Men generally feel like complete dorks on the dance floor-and we are afraid of looking less than macho as we do the FUNKY CHICKEN. At least the bride-groom “First Dance” is a slow one---if the groom doesn’t step on the bride’s feet and/or the dress-and manages to get through the song without fainting, it is generally considered a success.
In the free-form, strut-apart-from-your-partner dancing, we feel like total idiots as we shake our groove thing—hopefully in time with the beat of the music. Do I high-step it? What do I do with my hands? Do I look gay? These are all questions that fly through our heads as we simultaneously attempt to keep eye contact with our partner, whose dancing (no matter how lame) always sends us into comparison-mode, with the inevitable result of us feeling inadequate by contrast.
The only thing worse is seeing a guy next to you that dances like Michael Flatley from “Lord Of The Dance”……SHOWOFF!!!! . Now I REALLY look like an imbecile!
Below is a hilarious clip that maybe you have seen-The Evolution of Dance….well over 100 MILLION views on YouTube..Enjoy!

It WAS A "Super" Bowl!
Incredible game yesterday! Even if you are not a football fan, you had to appreciate the spectacle that was Super Bowl 43!
The Steelers pulled it out, but no one ANYWHERE is saying that the Cardinals didn’t “belong” in the Big Game (as was alluded to all week prior to kickoff)
And it took a HUGE game to overshadow all of the other aspects of the Super Bowl telecast. Below are my Top Ten—and for the first time in a LONG time, the game itself actually takes the Top Spot:
TOP TEN SUPER BOWL 43 MOMENTS
1) The Game —especially the record 100 yard interception/return for a TD at the end of the first half! Can you IMAGINE if that had been the final play of the SECOND HALF instead?
2) The Boss At Halftime-Bruce Springsteen lived up to all of the hype-and delivered a sizzling 4-song set!
3) Jennifer Hudson Singing the National Anthem-OK, I really don’t care that it was lip-synched---an incredible performance made more so by the recent tragic events of her life.
4) Ovation of General Patraeus- The Super Bowl crowd is usually heavy on the “corporate-I-got-in-without-actually-being-a-football-fan” set, but these people really gave our top military leader the salute he deserves—and in turn, all those across the world who serve under him. Goosebumps.
5) F-15 Flyover-Goosebumps, Part Two. If you have ever been at a stadium where this has occurred (I have), you will feel the same sensation every time thereafter-even when it is on TV.
6) The Journey concert-During the pre-game show. Replacement for Steve Perry lead singer Arnel Pineda totally nails it-and the crowd loved it, even when you factor in that most of them were probably intoxicated.
7) President Obama’s Interview with Matt Lauer-even though the technical difficulties diminished things a bit, it was a decent session. Matt was a bit too chummy with the Chief Executive (in my opinion), but aside from the comment about Jessica Simpson’s weight struggle after Matt’s magazine ambush, the President did an admirable job.
8) Larry Fitzgerald’s Pre-Game interview with Tiki Barber. If you didn’t cry at the story of Larry-and the death of his mother before he could make amends—you are not a human being! Forget the game. That piece may have done more good for families across America than any other single event on TV on any channel that day.
9) FOOD!-OK, this is not actually a “moment”…in my case, it was a four hour marathon of eating and drinking. One of the reasons I love the Super Bowl is that I can stuff my face without guilt on this day (only Thanksgiving shares this distinction)
10) COMMERCIALS- perhaps not as good as years past, but there were some good ones! I previewed the CareerBuilder.com spot in my Friday blog---hilarious! That one is in a tie with the following one for my absolute favorite-click below:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y8OriX9PWqs
I CRY laughing whenever I see it! Below is a compilation of last year’s best Super Bowl spots:
