It’s a often-told joke that Google will someday “take over the world”. Well, in a way--they already have. Aside from their complete dominance in the arena of “search”, they are expanding into so many areas, from the free blogging platform I use (Blogspot) to E-mail (Gmail) to what I think is the most amazing application so far—Google Maps!
Integrating conventional maps with satellite photos purchased from the government and even combining with terrain maps, you now literally have the WORLD on your computer. If you haven’t zoomed in on a satellite photo of your house from outer space yet, you should….it is incredible! You can also see “street level views”—which is nothing short of astounding.
Add to this the fact that it is FREE—and now available in a mobile version for your cell phone—and you can direct yourself literally anywhere. I don’t own a GPS device, but I have used Google maps, first on my Palm Treo and now Blackberry—to find my way in strange cities to destinations without fail. It even has a locater function for your cell! Using triangulation of the cell signals, a single key press can deliver YOUR location to a pinpoint on a Google map on your handheld!
